The deep dark space through which the good ol' Daedalus and its crew of Humans and Mush travels through, and what it contains, is unequivocally dangerous. Some of these dangers manifest themselves in the myriad 'Illnesses that the crew will invariably suffer during their time as the saviours of the universe as we know it.
Illnesses are a class of negative status which are an artifact of the game's Health system. Illnesses are divided up into three distinctive types, Physiological
Diseases, Psychological
Disorders and plain old
Injuries.
The distinction between the three types of Illness are so;
- Physiological Diseases are caused by germs, viruses, parasites and the like, coming from working in unsanitary conditions Such as Swamp, Forest or Insect Zones during an Expedition, eating improperly prepared food Such as various Alien Fruits and Alien Steaks, or by random chance on a cycle change. Most common of all they give the Vomiting Symptom and assorted chances to lose
and
, along with other problems. They can be cured if your Medlab contains the appropriate medicines if the RNG deigned to be so kind, or by the use of Healing or Self-Healing by a healer holding a
Medikit or located in the Medlab. There is also a small chance for a subset of diseases to cure themselves, though this is unreliable.
- Psychological Disorders are largely caused by the stresses of the mission i.e. seeing people die in front of you, and largely effect the
stat along with providing situational Symptoms that can be a large pain in the ass. These are cured by lying down in a room containing a
Shrink for several cycles, or by a specific pill.
- Injuries, unlike Disorders and Diseases, are caused almost entirely by Player on Player combat, be it a self-inflicted accident or successful attack. They're also the only Illnesses that effect Mush, as though they do not have immune systems or
to worry about, they still inhabit human bodies, which are prone to things getting broken. Injuries are largely statuses which affect
and
, but also give other nasty effects which severely limit what a player can do before they get them themselves healed in the Medlab with DIY Surgery, which has a risk of failing, or by a player with the
Medic skill who is located in the Medlab or is holding the
Medikit. While not always noted in the in-game description, they also reduce the Max
of a player, an effect which increases in severity the larger the number of Injuries.
Diseases
These are physical illnesses, often affecting
and
.
Diseases can be cured using the
Medikit, certain medicines the effects of which are randomised in each game, or rarely by the passing of time.

Disorders
These are Psychological illnesses, often affecting
.
Disorders can be cured by
Shrink treatment (more details on the skill page) and certain medicines, the effects of which are randomised in each game.
Injuries
These are physical traumas which are typically contracted through combat, bringing various disadvantages.
These are healed via Surgery which is performed with the Surgical Pod in Medlab by a
Medic or via DIY Surgery (the latter being more
intensive). Outside of the Medlab, Surgery is possible for a
Medic who is holding the
Medikit
